Horsehead & Flame Nebula
The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) and the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) are two iconic deep-sky objects located in the constellation Orion, approximately 1,300–1,500 light-years from Earth.
THE PROCESS...
The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) and the neighbouring Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) are two of the most recognisable deep-sky objects within the constellation Orion. Illuminated by the bright star Alnitak, these nebulae showcase dramatic dark dust clouds, glowing hydrogen gas, and intricate interstellar structures, making them a rewarding but technically challenging astrophotography target.
The objective of this project was to capture and process a detailed image of the Horsehead and Flame Nebulae while preserving the fine dust structures, vibrant emission regions, and surrounding nebulosity. Due to the close proximity of the extremely bright star Alnitak, the project required careful exposure management to minimise glare and maintain detail across the entire image.
A structured deep-sky imaging workflow was followed to maximise image quality and consistency throughout the project.
The session began with precise polar alignment of the equatorial mount and configuration of the telescope, imaging camera, and autoguiding system. Several hours of long-exposure images were captured, alongside calibration frames used to correct sensor noise, optical imperfections, and uneven field illumination.
